Travel Tanzania in an Extended Land Cruiser

Planning a road trip with friends or family? Or are you a keen wildlife photographer? Our Extended Land Cruiser offers space for up to seven passengers plus your driver, and is purpose-built for long days of wildlife viewing. With enlarged side windows, a pop-up roof, an onboard fridge, and power sockets for charging cameras and phones, it’s the perfect 4x4 for game drives in Tanzania.

The Extended Land Cruiser is reserved exclusively for those who book a self-drive tour with us (rental with itinerary, permits and hotels). Due to its size and handling characteristics, this Land Cruiser can only be rented with one of our professional driver-guides, ensuring a smooth safari experience.

Extended Land Cruiser

Spec sheet: Toyota Extended Land Cruiser

Please note that while our vehicles are well-maintained, they are not new. Features such as the audio system or A/C are not comparable to what you are used to in cars back home or in Southern Africa, where roads are smoother and rental vehicles are typically newer.

New Land Cruisers are not available for hire in Tanzania. The classic Land Cruisers you see on safari can be up to twenty years old, but they are extremely powerful and reliable. With simple electronics and a robust design, the Land Cruisers you see in Tanzania are made for slower travel on rough roads in the bush.

Interior and tools

  • Pop-up roof: Yes.
  • Roof hatch: Yes, located above the driver and passenger seats.
  • Inverter: Yes, allowing you to charge your devices while driving.
  • Dual battery (for fridge): No. This means the fridge only works when the engine is running.
  • Water tank: No.
  • A/CYes, but only in the front dashboard, so passengers on the last row will not benefit much from the A/C. During game drives, the pop-up roof will be open, providing natural airflow and ventilation. The car is always delivered to you with a working A/C. Please note that we don’t perform field repairs or send a replacement vehicle in the rare case of an A/C problem. Wiring and piping are sensitive and are affected by bumpy roads and dust. The knowledge and equipment to repair A/C are sadly not available in the field.
  • Audio: Radio with small speakers, a USB, and an audio port. Bring your own audio cable (mini jack) to play music from your phone.
  • Radio: This vehicle is equipped with a 27 MHz radio, enabling the driver to communicate with other guides/rangers within the parks.
  • Boot: We recommend packing your luggage in soft duffel bags, as they fit more easily than suitcases. For groups of five to seven passengers, some bags may need to be stored between the seats inside the vehicle.
  • Tools: Wheel spanner, towing rope, jumper cables, high-lift jack, shovel, fire extinguisher, reflector triangles, and first aid kit.
