Spec sheet: Toyota Land Cruiser Troopy

The classic Land Cruiser Troopy model is the perfect vehicle for game drives with family or a group of friends. Its rooftop can be lifted, providing a full 360-degree view—no wildlife will go unnoticed! This model comes with six window seats. When travelling with one of our local drivers, your group can include up to five people.

Are you planning to go camping? We recommend renting our Land Cruiser Double Cab instead. The pop-up roof of the Troopy is not compatible with a rooftop tent. If you do like to take the Land Cruiser on a camping safari, it's best to rent it with a ground tent and camp gear. In this setup, we remove the last row of seats to create additional storage space, as the Troopy’s boot is small. This reduces the seating capacity from six to four people.

Toyota Land Cruiser Troopy specifications

Please note that while our vehicles are well-maintained, they are not new. Features such as the audio system or A/C are not comparable to what you are used to in cars back home or in Southern Africa, where roads are smoother and rental vehicles are typically newer.

New Land Cruisers are not available for hire in Tanzania. The classic Land Cruisers you see on safari can be up to twenty years old, but they are extremely powerful and reliable. With simple electronics and a robust design, these vehicles are made for slower travel on rough roads in the bush.

The interior and tools

  • Pop-up roof: Yes
  • Roof hatch: Yes, there is one above the driver's seat.
  • Inverter: Yes, allowing you to charge your devices while driving.
  • Dual battery (for fridge): No. Without a dual battery, the fridge only works when the engine is running.
  • Water tank: No.
  • A/C: No. The reason is that wiring and piping are sensitive and are affected by bumpy roads and dust. The knowledge and equipment to repair A/C are sadly not available in the field. During game drives, the pop-up roof will be open, providing natural airflow and ventilation. Otherwise, we recommend you always drive with your windows open.
  • Audio: Radio with small speakers, a USB, and an audio port. Bring your own audio cable (mini jack) to play music from your phone.
  • Boot: The boot is small. We advise packing your luggage in soft duffel bags as they pack more easily than suitcases. If your travel group is six, you will store some bags between the seats inside the car.
  • Tools: Wheel spanner, towing rope, jumper cables, high-lift jack, shovel, fire extinguisher, reflector triangles and a first aid kit.
  • Extras: Roadmap and Driving in Tanzania manual. Roadtrippers who book a self-drive tour receive a planned route with driving directions and tips along the way.
